Questioning


Asking questions is a fundamental part of finding information and for subtle (and otherwise) persuasion. Here are various questioning techniques:
  • Closed :That seek short answers.
  • Chunking: Chunk up and down for more or less detail.
  • Clear: That are simple and unambiguous.
  • Columbo Technique:Asking stupid questions that get the answers you want.
  • Double Blind: Whichever way you answer, the result is the same.
  • Echo: Repeat what they say as a question.
  • Empowering: That release limits on people.
  • Funnel: Seeking more detail or more general information.
  • Group: Tips for asking questions of many people at once.
  • Questions that lead to answers.
  • Kipling: Rudyard Kipling's six servants.
  • Leading: That may or may not be a good thing for you.
  • Open: For long and detailed answers.
  • Open/Closed: yes/no or long answer.
  • Positive: Deliberately leading the other person.
  • Probing: Digging for more detail; Specific questions for finding detail.
  • Rhetorical: Questions without answers.
  • Socratic: Socrates' method of questioning in order to elicit learning.
